What we test

A missed on-call page is a patient safety event. These are the paths we exercise.

  • On-call escalation

Caller reports chest pain at 2:14 AM. Was the on-call physician paged within the escalation SLO, and did the page reach the right destination? We capture and time dispatch at a CanaryTel-owned test on-call number.

  • Urgent versus routine triage

The answering line has to classify correctly. We test the boundary: a refill request, a worsening symptom, a message that should wait until morning.

  • 911 advisory

Where your script requires the agent to advise a caller to hang up and dial 911, we check that the advisory is given at the right step.

  • Message handling

Name, date of birth, and callback number captured and read back accurately, using fictional patient details.

How patient data is handled

Built for HIPAA-sensitive workflows. No certification is claimed.

  • Canary Calls use fictional patient data only.
  • Dispatch goes to a CanaryTel-owned test on-call number. We never contact real clinicians or staff.
  • Any plan that handles patient health information includes a BAA.
  • Canary Watch, which reads real call records, is in early access and is scoped with you in advance.

Security and data handling

Evidence for the people who ask

One scored result that every party can read.

  • Compliance and risk teams

Dated, timestamped evidence that after-hours escalation was tested, what failed, and what was fixed.

  • Liability insurers

Failure-path coverage and findings, in a form an underwriter can read.

  • Health systems overseeing vendors

An outside check on the answering service you pay, without needing the vendor to integrate anything.

  • Public programs

Some public programs now require secret-shopper surveys performed by an entity independent of both the agency and the plans it oversees.

A CanaryTel report provides evidence toward an obligation. It does not satisfy a regulation by itself. Customers and their counsel decide what is required.

Questions healthcare teams ask

Do you use real patient information?

No. Canary Calls use fictional patients and fictional details only. Test scripts never include real names, dates of birth, or clinical details.

Do you contact our physicians?

No. The test account’s on-call roster points to a CanaryTel-owned test number or inbox. Your real clinicians and staff are never paged or called.

Do you sign a BAA?

Any plan that handles patient health information includes a BAA, and we flow the same obligations down to every provider that touches the data. Canary Calls with fictional data are scoped to avoid PHI. Canary Watch reads real call records, so it is scoped with you in advance and covered by a BAA.

Does a CanaryTel report satisfy a regulation?

No. A report provides evidence toward an obligation. Your counsel decides what is required. During onboarding we list the obligations and contracts that apply and build the report from them. CanaryTel is built for HIPAA-sensitive workflows and does not claim any certification.

Can we run this without our answering service’s involvement?

Canary Calls come from outside, as ordinary inbound calls, so no integration is required. Whether the service must add a test account depends on the scenario. Canary Watch applies only with the vendor’s cooperation.
